PRODUCER

The Project: America in Transition is a Sundance-backed documentary series and community engagement campaign exploring relationships, family, and social issues for trans people of color. Director, André Pérez, founded the Trans Oral History project seven years ago motivated by the isolation he felt growing up in a military family in Virginia. The Job: The Producer is expected to be a full partner in the production and will work closely with the Director to coordinate logistics of the documentary series. The Producer will help the production team work together effectively, plan production trips to various locations around the country, and help secure more funding for the project. The position is at least 20 hours per week but preferred full-time hours. hours are flexible and much of this work will be done remotely. The Producer will be compensated with an equity stake in the project (negotiable 8-12% of the budget).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Researching grants and helping prepare grant applications
  • Courting large donor and other strategic partners
  • Representing America in Transition at Labs, Film festivals, and pitch sessions
  • Providing guidance on navigating film industry spaces
  • Creating a production schedule (with input from others on the team)
  • Recruit professional collaborators who are passionate, committed, and skilled
  • Track and remind of deadlines (grant deadlines, production deadlines, etc.)
  • Plan and attend regular meetings to maintain momentum with Community Advisory Board and other stakeholders.
  • Plan production trips (make travel reservations, ground transportation, verify baggage requirements, research local drone laws, etc.)
  • Ensure that Production Team and Community Advisory Board have access to all of the documents they need (ie. contracts, interview questions, mood boards, etc.)
  • Send files to the appropriate people (ie. make sure the composer gets a version of the film without music, the transcriptionist get audio from interviews immediately, and the translator has what they need)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Cares about making a difference
  • Experience working on at least one completed documentary project
  • Connections in and familiarity with the the film and/or television industry
  • BIlingual in Spanish/ English is strongly preferred and highly valued
  • Knowledgeable about or interested in learning about the transgender community

VIDEO EDITOR

The Job: The Video Editor will collaborate closely with the Director and Producer to help create high-quality, cinema vérité documentary shorts that include interviews, observational footage, drone footage, and family photos. Editor will help conceptualize and execute one sample 22 min episode that cuts together multiple stories as well as two 18 min educational episodes that each focus on one person’s story. The first will be cut from existing content and the other videos will be shot in August and September and both need to be edited by early-November. The rate is $1,000 per longer video and $200 per 2 min trailer (we’ll need one for each longer video). Ideal applicant approaches editing with a collaborative spirit, has experience working under deadlines, and would stick with the project for a second season or feature length version.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manipulate and edit film pieces in a way that is invisible to the audience
  • Take a brief to grasp production team’s needs and specifications
  • Give input into storyboards/scripts
  • Review raw material to select relevant, impactful b-roll
  • Trim footage segments and put together the sequence of the film
  • Input music, dialogues, graphics and effects
  • Create rough and final cuts
  • Meet with Production team and Community Advisory Board to receive feedback on rough cuts
  • Ensure logical sequencing and smooth running

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience in video editing (please send a work sample)
  • Solid experience with digital technology and editing software packages (e.g. Avid Media Composer, Lightworks, Premiere, After Effects, Final Cut)
  • Access to editing equipment or transportation
  • Knowledge of timing, motivation, continuity etc
  • Creative mind and storytelling skills
  • Care about making a difference
  • Knowledgeable about or interested in learning about the transgender community
  • BONUS: Familiarity with animated infographics or informational visuals
